WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT US?
Our class sizes are small because we know that the only way to teach effectively is to give every student individual attention.
We want you to have fun while you learn, so we won’t criticise you for making mistakes, we’ll just help you to correct them. Research shows you learn quicker when you’re having fun!
We incorporate skills such as musicality, styling, spin technique and body movement into our normal classes so you don’t have to attend specialist workshops to learn those things.
All our teachers are passionate and still in the process of learning themselves, which means they keep getting new ideas and their lessons don’t get stale or outdated.
We love what we do and want to share it with you… simple as that!
Whether you have never danced a step or are looking to become a professional we are here to help you on your dance journey. We offer a free trial class to all new students so you can come and see what we're all about.

ON1 or ON2?
Salsa On1 or On2 basically refers to variation in the timing dancers step on. Both are linear, 'cross-body' styles, rather than the more cyclical cuban style which is also very popular.
Historically the different timings derived from different influences and were quite different stylistically, with On 1, often known as 'LA Style' being more flashy and dramatic, while On 2, often known as 'Eddie Torres style - after the dancer who popularised it, known for a smoother feel with more complex turn patterns. Today there are many stylistic variations of both On1 and On2.
We teach both On1 and On2 classes at Cambridge Salsa Academy, based mostly on the 'Eddie Torres' style technique. Danie has taken classes with Eddie himself, as well as a number of other New York style teachers and regularly visits New York to continue training and stay in touch with current trends and stylistic variations.
If you are a beginner we recommend learning to dance 'On 1' first as this is the most popular timing danced in Cambridge, so it will give you the most flexibility in terms of dancing with different people. We also have higher level On1 classes for more experienced dancers.
Dancing 'On 2' is popular throughout Europe and in the London salsa scene and is gaining popularity in Cambridge. A lot of dancers say they enjoy dancing On2 because of the way it allows you to express the music and how it has an inherent fluidity.
For those who are experience dancing salsa On1 but are looking to learn how to dance On2 a lot of the technique you already know from salsa will be transferable and we can show you the differences between On1 & On2 and help you to transition to dancing On2. For those with some experience dancing On2 already we will help you to discover a deeper understanding of how you can connect and play with the music, while continuing to become proficient in leading and following technique and learning a range of turn patterns and styling.
MEET THE TEAM
With years of experience teaching and performing salsa and a Masters in Teaching Dance, Danie Street is one of the UK's top salsa dancers and brings a lot of skills to the table.
Zac has been dancing salsa for many years and has trained with lots of top instructors. He has a relaxed, funky style both on and off the dance floor and is always bringing some fun and cheekiness to the lesson.
Eszter has been training with Danie for a number of years and performed in Nueva Esencia dance team with Danie & Zac. She is a patient and encouraging teacher who loves to see the moment when something 'clicks' for students.
Roberto was bitten by the salsa bug almost a decade ago, when hanging out with a bunch of Mexicans. Since then, he's tried a bit of everything but he's taken a special liking for the New Yrok On2 style. He has performed internationally with Otradanz Academy and Estilo Sabroso. He is relatively new to teaching, but he's met this new challenge with passion and attention to detail.

If you still have questions get in touch.
Do I need to come with a partner?
No! We rotate in partner work classes so you don't need to come with a partner, but bringing friends along is always a good idea :)
What should I wear?
Casual clothing is fine, footwear should have smooth soles - avoid trainers or grippy soles such as boots. Heels are good, although not necessary. If you do wear heels, make sure you can move comfortably in them and they have an ankle strap to avoid them coming off during movement (avoid platforms or very high heels)
Is there parking?
Yes there is plenty of free parking available within the school gates - please just be sure to use Gate 4 for access and enter the access code 0209 to open the gates.
Do you offer 1-1 lessons?
Yes. 1-1 lessons are a great way to sharpen up technique or work on a specific aspect of dancing and can be organised at a convenient time. Subject to availability and your needs they can take place in a studio or, where appropriate, in your home.
Do you do Gift Vouchers?
Yes! We can provide a gift voucher for a number of group / 1-1 lessons and personalise it with a message of your choosing. Please Contact Us to let us know what you would like and allow 2 working days to get your voucher in time!
Why are your classes more expensive than others?
Our classes are a little more expensive than some of the other classes in the area. This is because we keep our class sizes small and use a studio environment as this enables us to give individual feedback to each of our students so that they are actually learning in every class and not just imitating what the teacher is doing without fully understanding it or having the opportunity to ask questions. Just like any service there are budget options and more exclusive options and it's up to the customer to decide which is right for them, so basically we're like the champagne of salsa classes ;)
